IB Middle Years Program (MYP)

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) at MSGA is a challenging program of instruction that embraces international education standards and a rigorous assessment process. Students study all of the major disciplines including languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, technology and physical education.

For students aged 11 to 16, MYP provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

Comparing the Traditional Classroom with the IB MYP Classroom

How does the IB MYP Learning Model compare with the traditional teaching model?

  • In a traditional classroom, the teacher is the center of learning. In an IB MYP classroom, the student is the center of learning.
  • In a traditional classroom, subject areas are taught in isolation. In an IB MYP classroom, connections are made between all subject areas.
  • A traditional classroom uses traditional assessments and learning experiences. An IB MYP classroom uses authentic, real-world assessments and learning experiences.
  • In a traditional classroom, learning is linked to the subject, with hopes that students will make connections to the world on their own. In an IB MYP classroom, learning is linked to the surrounding world through the "Areas of Interaction."
  • In a traditional classroom, participation in Languages or the Arts is optional. In an IB MYP classroom, participation in a second Language, PE, and the Arts are required.
  • Additionally, IB MYP students must complete and reflect upon service to the community and aim to fulfill the IB Learner Profile.
